September 2014: Project euVETsupport presents project results and sets milestone in the communication of European VET instruments to a wider public.

On a final two-day conference on 11th and 12th September in Berlin the 12 member project team of euVETsupport presented their work results to an audience of over 60 EQF and ECVET experts and users from nine European countries.

Under the coordination of DEKRA Akademie GmbH (DE), the euVETsupport project consortium aimed to develop support tools and structures in order to enable vocational education and training (VET) and HRD professionals - primarily in the transport and logistics sector - to successfully implement and make use of European VET instruments such as EQF (European Qualifications Framework) and ECVET (European Credit System for Vocational Education and Training) in their daily praxis.

Especially the main result of the 24 month project work, the costume fit euVETsupport portal (www.euVETsupport.eu) with its content and specific interaction possibilities for every user type, was regarded by the audience and ECVET experts as a precision landing in order to address especially VET providers but also industry. Dr Anne Murphy from the Higher Education Policy Research Unit (HEPRU) of the Dublin Institute of Technology called it “The best piece of work of its kind, because it enables the user to handle a very complex issue in a very easy way.”

The conference initiated and promoted an open discussion and exchange of ideas and experiences between the participants. It became clear that the experience with ECVET, EQF and learning outcome orientation and their implementation in daily work reality varies within the different European countries.

A number of speakers and participants pointed out that industry – although only rarely aware of the European tools - is already well prepared for the implementation of the learning outcomes orientation while the application of this new perspective on learning within VET is still perceived with hesitation by the education side.

As Gabriele Fietz from the German ECVET expert team pointed out, there is still a lot more to be done to dispel prejudice and misconception of ECVET and EQF etc. which are, as she said, often associated with a loss of flexibility, additional efforts, increased bureaucracy and formalism.

Despite the different experiences with ECVET, EQF and learning outcomes orientation all participants of the conference fully agreed on the fact, that for the sustainability not only of the project euVETsupport but for the whole enterprise of making those European approaches aiming to foster the mobility of workers and learners in Europe to an integral part of VET- and working reality - profound and substantial communication and dissemination work is needed and hence an objective of the near future.

According to Prof. Sandra Bohlinger from the University of Osnabrück, every professional in the field of VET can make an individual contribution to this by becoming a role model for the practical application of learning outcomes orientation within the own teaching and training praxis. As Prof. Bohlinger summed up concisely: “…the basic ideas of the European Union are peacekeeping, social cohesion and competitiveness. If we want to implement these basic ideas, then instruments such as EQF, ECVET, their validation etc. are nothing more than opportunities to realize them".

Within the framework of an efficient sustainability strategy the wide range of euVETsupport project results will be taken forward to the follow up project “METALOG” that started in 2013. The METALOG project aims at concerting and transferring previous efforts of various European logistics projects and initiatives through the development of a Sectoral Qualifications Framework for the transport and logistics sector (LQF). On the long run they aim to establish a “European Logistics Skills Network”. www.project-metalog.eu
